Home Schooling? - An Education Alternative
Many parents today are becoming frustrated with
the public school system and cannot afford private school. Violence
in the schools is increasing and fewer students are receiving the
education they need to further themselves later on in life. Many
believe the shift from academics that allowed an increase in
individuality has shifted to socialization.
The alternative is home schooling and it is becoming an educational
alternative as fewer students are graduating with the skills needed
to further their education. The academic and intellectual skills
needed to obtain a college degree are not being focused on in the
public school especially in areas where the student-teacher ratio
is extremely high. The city schools deal with a variety of problems
on a daily basis and often this interferes with education.
As more people become aware of home schooling as a tool to get
their kids on track and don`t play
Online Games, there is
expected to be an increase in the number of people who use this
method. Getting back to the basics of reading, writing and
arithmetic is what these parents are trying to accomplish. The
first time school attendance was made compulsory was in 1647. The
Massachusetts Bay Colony enacted a law that ordered every town to
send their children to school and "not to endeavor to teach, by
themselves or others, their children and apprentices".
Again after the American Revolution another attempt was made at
compulsory schools for all children. It was not looked upon
favorably and in 1880 in Barnstable, on Cape Cod, the militia was
used to force people to send their children to school. Today the
choice is - home school, private school or public school. Many are
choosing home schooling in order to feel their children are getting
the basics of education as it once was taught.
