One type of education that is playing more of a
role today is early childhood education. Often called "early
childhood learning" or preschool, this used to be more of a place
where children were sent to play rather than learn. However, the
children learn basically what they used to learn in kindergarten
today in preschool. The child successfully completing the school
year in preschool will know how to say their ABCs, write their
name, count and many other skills that were previously taught in
kindergarten.
Developmental skills are honed by the parents to start. After this,
when they approach the age of going to school the teachers are
their mentors. The child that has spent time having been read to or
worked with on the computer even as early as three years old will
be smarter, will learn faster and will show more of an interest in
learning.
It has been proven that children who did not receive the nurturing
and interaction they need with adults have problems in preschool
and kindergarten. They are often kept back in early grades because
they lack the skills to move to the next level. Even
kindergarteners are kept back to learn the skills they did not have
when the kindergarten year was over.
This is one reason the early learning years should be spent
interacting with your child before sending them off to preschool
and to let others deal with the inadequacies that were not addressed earlier. Developmental problems will ensue
and cause problems beyond the early years if a solution is not
sought.
Orphanages in Russia and Romania have found children who did not
receive this crucial interaction and did not form attachments to
caregivers. They are not developed in the social aspects of
relationships and have not formed the healthy relationships other
children form. Their development was far from the healthy
development children should experience.
